Dr. Hema Anukula
Oral Oncologist & Maxillofacial Surgeon
Trained in cancer surgery, jaw reconstruction, and conditions affecting the mouth, jaw and face.
For many patients, surgery is not the end of treatment — it is the beginning of a second journey. After jaw resection for cancer, facial trauma reconstruction, or prolonged OSMF leading to tooth loss, patients face significant challenges eating, speaking, and maintaining nutrition. Dr. Hema's training in both oncological surgery and maxillofacial reconstruction means she manages this continuum without handoffs. Implants in reconstructed or irradiated bone require decisions that a general implantologist cannot safely make in isolation.
Patients who need this
Completed jaw resection for oral cancer (bone graft or free flap in place)
Tooth loss following radiation therapy — ORN risk requires pre-implant assessment
Edentulous after facial trauma and jaw reconstruction
Prolonged OSMF with secondary tooth loss — compromised soft tissue
Failed conventional denture after jaw surgery — anatomy is altered
Seeking second opinion on rehabilitation after oncology treatment elsewhere
Do not refer post-oncology patients asking about implants to a general dental implant centre. Implant placement in irradiated bone carries an osteoradionecrosis risk that requires specialist evaluation first.
